Cape Verde. According to
CountryAAH, Cape Verde, which has a special partnership
with the European Union (EU) since 2007, strengthened ties
with Europe during the year. In June, President Jorge Carlos
Fonseca paid a visit to Jean-Claude Juncker, President of
the European Commission, and in October Neven Mimica,
Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development,
traveled to Cape Verde. Mimica announced that the EU will
contribute € 3.5 million to a project to improve the water
and sewerage system in the capital Praia. The project will
be carried out in collaboration with the city of Madrid.
In February, the largest drug seizure was made in the
country so far. More than 9.5 tonnes of cocaine were found
on board a Panama-registered vessel with a Russian crew.
According to authorities, the ship was on its way to Morocco
but had to contact Praia because a crew member had died.
