Palau. According to
CountryAAH, Former President Thomas Remengesau passed away in
August at the age of 89. Remengesau temporarily resigned as
the country's highest leader in 1985 after President Haruo
Remeliik was assassinated. The same thing happened in 1988,
when Lazarus Salii committed suicide. Remengesau is the
father of Tommy Remengesau, the one who ruled Palau the
longest in modern times (2001–09 and since 2013).

In July, President Remengesau made a statement pointing
to the need for reduced emissions from large vessels. The
following month, he promised to put pressure on Australia to
do more to curb climate change. The statement was made
during a meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum in Tuvalu.
Concerns about the effects of global warming are high among
Pacific Islanders, where the consequences have already begun
to be felt.
