The area was originally known as Bedelltown after the Bedell family who were among the first settlers in 1695.
In 1787, a group of Quakers purchased the land and renamed it Bethpage after their meeting house which was located on what is now known as Round Swamp Road. This meeting house still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
