Cape Verde. Cape Verde, which has a special partnership with the European Union (EU) since 2007, strengthened ties with Europe during the year. In June, President Jorge Carlos Fonseca paid a visit to Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and in October Neven Mimica, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, traveled to Cape Verde. Mimica announced that the EU will contribute € 3.5 million to a project to improve the water and sewerage system in the capital Praia. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the city of Madrid.
In February, the largest drug seizure was made in the country so far. More than 9.5 tonnes of cocaine were found on board a Panama-registered vessel with a Russian crew. According to authorities, the ship was on its way to Morocco but had to contact Praia because a crew member had died.
