Maldives. The April parliamentary election was the first held since Abdulla Yamin 2018 lost the power he tried to maintain and strengthen with questionable methods. The major winner of the election became the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) under the leadership of President Mohamed Nashid. The party received 65 of the 87 seats in parliament, the people’s majlis. While the MDP was moving forward with 39 seats, the Yamin-led Maldives Progressive Party (PPM) backed from 33 seats to five, as many as the Republican Party (RP) got. A further two smaller parties and seven independent candidates were elected to the legislative assembly. Of the elected members, only four were women. The turnout was 75%.

Earlier in the year, another criminal investigation was initiated against Abdulla Yamin. He was already accused of receiving the equivalent of about US $ 1.5 million in the fall of 2018, money that was subsequently deposited into foreign bank accounts. The new investigation dealt with suspicions that the president was trying to bribe witnesses in the current money laundering case. Yamin was sentenced in November to five years in prison.

In another notable case in 2015-16, former Vice President Ahmed Adib was sentenced to 15 years in prison for being involved in a murder trial of the then President Yamin. He was then also convicted of corruption. The ruling was annulled in May by a court that described the legal process leading to the “politically motivated”. The trial would therefore have to be reconsidered. Adib was arrested in August when he tried to enter India by boat illegally. He was brought back to his home by Maldivian police and testified a few weeks later before the court that during his time as vice president he was involved in illegal money transactions on behalf of Yamin.
