Palau. Former President Thomas Remengesau passed away in August at the age of 89. Remengesau temporarily resigned as the country’s highest leader in 1985 after President Haruo Remeliik was assassinated. The same thing happened in 1988, when Lazarus Salii committed suicide. Remengesau is the father of Tommy Remengesau, the one who ruled Palau the longest in modern times (2001–09 and since 2013).
