The history of Vanlue dates back to the early 1800s when settlers from Virginia began to move into the area looking for more arable land than what was available in their home state. The first known settlers were George and Mary Miller who arrived in 1812 and established a homestead on a parcel of land that would eventually become part of Vanlue. In 1837, more settlers arrived and soon after the first church was built in the area, giving rise to what would become known as “Old Vanlue” – an area encompassing several small villages spread out across Hancock County.
In 1883, when railroads began to expand throughout Ohio, Old Vanlue was divided into two separate villages – North Vanlue and South Vanlue – with each having its own post office for mail delivery services. By this time, the village already had several stores, churches, schools and other amenities that catered to its growing population which had grown from around 200 people in 1860 to over 500 by 1880.
